A light grey Amarok Style V6 has driven into history, becoming the 100,000th unit of Volkswagen’s ute to sell in Australia, the main market for this iconic dual cab.

On November 12, Pickerings Auto Group of Townsville, Queensland, handed over the keys to six figure-making Style V6 to returning customer Peta Wilson.

In recognition of the occasion, Volkswagen contributed free of charge Ms Wilson’s choice of accessories in the form of roof bars; roof top tent; bonnet protector, snorkel, dual battery system and smart power outlet. This represented a combined value of almost $9000.

Now in its second generation, the Amarok was introduced to Australia in 2010. In 2017, Amarok become the first mass production ute to be equipped with a V6 turbo diesel. This combined with superior handling, saw the ‘Rok set a benchmark for performance and dynamics.

Australia became the home of the Amarok V6, these versions outselling the original and more affordable four cylinder types by as much as nine to one.  Typically Amarok customers have favoured the higher end versions; in this generation it is the Style V6 that has found the most homes.

“This is a milestone achievement for our Australian sales champion,” Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles director Ryan Davies said.

“The new generation Amarok was designed and engineered with Australian conditions as the foremost consideration.

“The design team spent several years located in this country to better understand requirements. While sales are reflecting that the newer truck has ‘picked up’ where the previous one left off, we have even greater ambitions for this pillar of Volkswagen’s Australian business.”

The next chapter of the Amarok’s Australian story will be the 10 Deserts edition, a tribute to last month’s Guiness World Record setting feat in which an Amarok traversed  Australia’s 10 deserts in an extraordinary six days and 17 hours.

Leaving from Maree in South Australia, the accessorised Amarok V6 Style was driven across the Tirari, Strzelecki, Sturt Stony, Simpson, Pedirka, Great Victoria, Gibson, Great Sandy, Little Sandy and Tanami deserts, arriving in Alice Springs 6,241km later.

The Amarok 10 Deserts Limited Edition of some 300 will become available in the second quarter of 2025. It is based on the Amarok Life model grade.

“We had long known that the Amarok would clock up six figures this year,” Mr Davies said.

“Showing how singularly well suited Amarok is to the toughest conditions on this continent is our way of celebrating this success.”
