Subaru's first rear-wheel drive sports car, the thoroughbred BRZ is now on-sale, offering a whole new level of accessible excitement for sports car fans.

With a low centre of gravity comparable to the world's best - and most expensive - supercars, BRZ is an economic alternative for enthusiastic drivers.

BRZ is such a sell-out success worldwide that Subaru expects only 201 vehicles available for sale between now and the end of the year.

This has enabled Subaru to offer the BRZ at a National Driveaway Price\* that will include free scheduled servicing for the first three years/60,000 kilometres\*\* of ownership.

The National Driveaway Prices are:

BRZ six speed manual - $37,150

BRZ six-speed automatic - $39,730

Because BRZ supply is so tight, Subaru has taken the bold initiative to exclusively sell it online, via subaru.com.au, to provide a seamless customer experience.

Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia, said: "High demand with short supply gave us some challenges on how to give our customers the best possible purchases experience.

"We believe that online purchase will provide transparency in supply, pricing and delivery expectations that match our high standards.

"Additionally, we have appointed a BRZ coordinator who will be a dedicated point of contact for BRZ customers.

"Our aim is to provide an exclusive experience. Every BRZ we sell will be numbered and customers will be able to log on and receive updates on the status of their BRZ."

Customers will be able to complete the entire BRZ purchase online when the car goes "live" on subaru.com.au at 12 noon on Monday, 16 July.

Other features of the process include:

Despite offering a one-off departure from Subaru's long-established Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive roots, BRZ's dynamics are pure Subaru, with the brand's DNA clearly stamped all over the sports car - some components are developed from the WRX STI.

BRZ is built exclusively at Subaru's Gunma Main Plant in Japan - incredibly for such a small car, it maintains Subaru's range-wide achievement of a five-star occupant safety rating from the independent Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

The new generation Subaru FA 2.0 litre four-cylinder horizontally opposed Boxer engine is designed specifically for the model and is mounted as low as possible, producing agility and a thrilling, nimble drive. It produces an impressive 147 Kilowatts of power and 205 Newtonmetres of torque.

BRZ's low Centre of Gravity (CoG) combines with light weight, compact size and Subaru's trademark Boxer engine to provide one of the most entertaining drives of any new sports car of the past decade, right across the speed range.

The back: front weight distribution of 53:47 aids its dynamic excellence.

Contrasting with conventional direct injection engines, the FA offers perfectly balanced high output, fuel efficiency and eco-friendly performance.

It combines the D-4S injection system with the dual Active Valve Control System (AVCS), for superb linear power delivery from low revs, underlined by the sporty engine sound.

BRZ features new 17-inch alloy wheels, designed for light weight, rigidity and braking performance.

Its suspension set-up is unique to the model - specifically tuned to provide handling excellence, inspiring driver confidence with high grip levels and stability.

BRZ offers superior ride comfort and low levels of impact harshness, while maintaining sharp steering response, impressive levels of mid corner stability and excellent dynamic balance due to the low CoG, inherent in the design of Subaru's Boxer engine.

Mr Senior added: "BRZ is a stunning package on so many levels.

"It's priced to be accessible, yet is one of the most entertaining and fun sports cars available.

"BRZ has amazing on-road presence, while inside, the driver's seat is positioned low and close to the centre of gravity, helping the fantastic feel, agility and thrilling response.

"This car clearly has Subaru DNA all over it, with some components directly developed from our WRX STI, including the propeller shaft.

"The new Subaru Boxer engine is already winning accolades for its ideal combination of high power and fuel efficiency, and it's the first of our engines to feature direct petrol injection.

"And of course BRZ continues our standard of five-star occupant safety."

TECHNICAL

ENGINE OVERVIEW

BRZ's lightweight and compact new generation FA 2.0 litre, four-cylinder horizontally opposed Boxer engine meets strict EURO5 emission standards.

It is the first Subaru engine to feature direct petrol injection and produces 147 Kilowatts of power at 7000 rpm and 205 Newtonmetres of torque at 6600 rpm.

The Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) engine was developed by Subaru specifically for BRZ and is based on the same design concept as the latest FB Boxer engine, already featured in new generation XV and Impreza.

However, compared to the long-stroke FB, the FA has a stroke length of 86 mm, together with a square bore of the same dimension, enabling it to handle higher engine speeds.

It is capable of being revved up to 7000 rpm.

The belt layout is exclusively designed for BRZ, which has a front intake system designed for the low centre of gravity.

CRANKSHAFT

The engine is positioned so low that the crankshaft is located equivalent to the height of an average person's shin.

To accommodate the larger bore diameter, the crank pin diameter is increased from 48 mm to 50 mm, while increased strength reduces deformation at high engine speeds.

As with the FB engine, the crankshaft has been given a high frequency hardening treatment, and bearings also have copper alloy bases, ensuring reliability from the lightweight but high-power unit.

The shapes of the lubricated surfaces are also optimized, partly to reduce distortion during operation.

PISTONS

BRZ's pistons have a special crown shape to accommodate the engine's high compression ratio and D-4S fuel injection system, which is specifically tuned to the new FA engine.

The combustion chamber shape is designed for a higher compression ratio to ensure maximum control of the fuel vapour injected into the cylinders.

Valve spaces are enlarged to improve intake/exhaust efficiency.

The bottom of the oil pan has a shallow profile, while vertical dimensions of the exhaust are minimized, ensuring enough road clearance for practical driving.

VALVE OPERATING SYSTEM

BRZ's engine features a new dual Active Valve Control System (AVCS), helping improve power, fuel efficiency and emissions. The AVCS also reduces oil consumption. Engine friction is reduced by lowering pump work loss at high speeds.

The engine's 12.5 high compression ratio allows it to use the Atkinson cycle range, suited to fuel efficient driving. In the Atkinson cycle, the valve is opened longer during the intake stroke. It is kept open when the piston starts to rise. It reduces the amount of air compressed and is used at engine speeds more suited to fuel efficiency.

The FA engine's intake exhaust valves are designed for high engine speed and power. The valve diameter and umbrella underside shape are optimized for the combustion chamber design.

The exhaust side uses hollow sodium-filled valves to reduce weight and withstand the harsh thermal environment created by high engine speed and power.

LUBRICATION SYSTEM

To maintain oil pressure at high engine speeds, the oil pump has a special design with a new rotor shape. To deliver the required oil pressure and volume, the oil pump has a two-stage relief structure designed to complement relief port shape and valve opening pressure. This lowers friction.

The oil pump has been built into the underside of the chain cover, and the AVCS solenoid valve attached to the cover. This simplifies the structure and reduces the number of parts. Serviceability also benefits from positioning the oil filter on top.

COOLING SYSTEM

A new isolated cooling channel design ensures efficient coolant flow rate to the heads. Improved cooling around the sparkplugs increases the knock limit while enhancing power and fuel efficiency.

Fuel efficiency is also improved by reducing coolant flow rate to the block - oil temperature is kept high in the cylinder block walls and the friction of piston movement reduced.

BOTTOM BYPASS CHANNEL

The new bottom bypass channel is designed primarily for faster engine warm-up after start.

By circulating coolant through the engine's bottom bypass channel while still warming up, the oil temperature rises more rapidly, with the reduced friction aiding fuel efficiency.

RADIATOR

To accommodate the low centre of gravity and vehicle height, the radiator is inclined by 17 degrees.

The radiator is a cross-flow type, with a high-performance core and new salt resistant lightweight material.

FUEL SYSTEM

The D-4S direct injection system features two independent sets of injectors, one set handling port injection in the low-spend range, the other cylinder injection in the mid-speed range. Both sets are used at high speeds.

It provides uniform mixture formation at all engine speeds, while lowering fuel consumption and emissions, and boosting power.

The high pressure pump is driven by the left-hand intake camshaft drive, increasing fuel pressure to 20 MPa. The camshaft bearings use roller lifters to reduce the friction of pump drive.

The shape of the high pressure injector's vapour fan spray works with the piston crown to produce the best gas mixture.

A new high precision fuel pressure sensor achieves advanced control.

To restrain vapour generation, the feed pump changes the fuel pressure supplied from the tank from 350 kPa to 400 kPa.

FUEL TANK

To enable a larger rear differential and maintain sufficient rear passenger space without raising the vehicle height, the fuel tank is a saddle shape, made of highly moldable plastic. Its 50-litre volume maximizes cruise distance with minimum tank weight. It is 12 per cent lighter than sheet metal tanks of the same shape.

It rests either side of the propeller shaft and has indentations on top, to lower the rear seat height.

A cover on the bottom of the fuel tank improves aerodynamic performance.

FUEL PUMP

The fuel pump is a high-efficiency low-current type that uses about 40 per cent less electrical power than conventional models.

SPARK PLUGS

The spark plugs can handle high engine compression ratios and power, and have a high heating value, suiting a sports car.

The iridium chip electrodes offer better wear.

INTAKE SYSTEM

As the engine is positioned low and near the BRZ's centre, intake is from the front - the first time this layout has been used in a Subaru.

The port diameter is increased to boost engine power, while ports are shortened for response. Branch length ensures a uniformly balanced air volume is supplied to each cylinder.

The electronic throttle is positioned at the front of the engine to accommodate the front intake layout.

The air intake is designed to reduce air resistance by around 20 per cent, compared to conventional 2.0-litre normally aspirated vehicles.

SENSOR SYSTEM

The engine's twin knock sensors enable high power while maintaining combustion and offering better knock detection.

EXHAUST SYSTEM

The exhaust has a 4-2-1 convergence layout, supporting higher engine power. Pipe diameters are increased to reduce air resistance.

By making exhaust gas flow efficient and activating the catalytic converters, the manifold complies with strict EURO5 emission standards.

The main muffler is an expanding and sound-proof type, with 27-litres capacity. It is insulated on top to reduce noise.

ALTERNATOR

To maintain the charge/discharge balance and improve fuel efficiency, a high-efficiency alternator is used.

BATTERY

The battery is positioned behind the front wheels to improve weight distribution.

ENGINE MOUNTS

The two front and single rear engine mounts provide suspension to support the engine's centre of gravity. They are tuned to reduce vibration and noise.

The front mounts are fluid-filled, based on those in the Subaru Impreza. The springs are fine-tuned for improved driving stability, reduced idling and floor vibrations and enhancing steering response.

BRZ has a shorter span for attaching the frame and cross-member, enabling the latter to be made of lightweight aluminium, providing great strength and inhibiting engine vibration.

TRANSMISSION

Both the short-stroke six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions have been specifically developed for BRZ.

Manual development focused on smooth shift operation, while the auto targeted a strong sensation of low-speed acceleration and fuel efficiency at higher speeds.

The manual shift control uses a nonlinear cam that reduces friction with a ball detent, making it easier to find neutral and enabling quick gear selection.

The clutch is a wide-angle damper type.

The damper characteristic was chosen to provide sports car road performance.

The automatic transmission uses adaptive control, a technology that determines whether or not to change gear based on current driving conditions.

The adaptive control is adopted from other current Subarus. It uses information such as the throttle opening and travel speed to determine whether the vehicle is on an up hill or down hill, with control provided to match the conditions and anticipate the driver's needs.

The automatic features Sports mode, meaning BRZ can upshift more quickly, while blipping the throttle when down-shifting, to match the engine rpm to the road. The result is a dynamic drive.

The D-range setting includes the "S-mode" switch and "Temporary" setting, letting the driver select the mode to suit the situation. The Temporary setting enables sports driving in the D-range, offering flexible techniques such as driver-controlled engine braking.

Manual mode replicates gear changing in a manual transmission.

Normal mode is for easy, environmentally-friendly driving.

Quick shift is achieved thanks to control valves with outstanding hydraulic response.

Extending the lockup range to lower speeds also enhances the drive experience.

REAR DIFFERENTIAL

BRZ features a "Torsen" Limited Slip Differential.

Two front and two rear mounts support the differential. The front and right-rear are fluid filled while the left-rear is solid. They are tuned to maintain rigid feel, reduce noise and vibration.

The solid rear mount is held down by a spring to inhibit transmitted vibration, while improving durability.

PROPELLER SHAFT/DRIVESHAFT

BRZ's propeller shaft is based on the design in the Subaru WRX STI.

The sleeve yoke is changed in both manual and automatic models to accommodate the new transmission, while the flange yoke is changed to accommodate the new differential.

Floating bushings are introduced to reduce vibration noise conveyed to the BRZ's body.

New front and rear axles have been created for the front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout.

The driveshaft is also based on that in the WRX STI, with the diameter increased from 25 mm to 28 mm.

STEERING

BRZ offers the excellent steering stability instantly associated with Subarus.

It responds to the driver in a highly linear fashion.

The electric power steering motor is located inside the steering column - another factor benefitting CoG.

CHASSIS AND BODY STRUCTURE

Front structural stiffness contributes to BRZ's accurate steering response.

The ratio of high-tensile sheet metal is increased to reduce weight, while maintaining structural integrity and crashworthiness.

Foam polypropylene is used for the transmission undercover, absorbing sound and reducing weight. An air scoop also improves transmission cooling.

Brake cooling ducts on the front of the mudguards, together with air flaps, improve cooling and aerodynamic performance.

SUSPENSION

Both the suspension and body were specifically developed to balance high level handling and stability, producing a crisp steering feel.

BRZ's suspension produces superior handling that inspires driver confidence, with high grip levels and stability. It offers a fantastic combination of great ride comfort and low levels of impact harshness, while maintaining sharp steering response, high levels of mid corner stability and excellent dynamic balance.

FRONT

The MacPherson strut front suspension is designed to produce direct, sharp response. It is positioned directly below the engine.

Front strut mounts are positioned low and to the side of the tyre. This enables sufficient stroke and maintains clearance between the bonnet and mount, for pedestrian protection.

Urethane bump stops are used, producing a natural steering feel. Damping is increased through the use of hard mounts.

The front suspension uses a new cross-member/lower arm to support the low engine position.

The stabilizer bar mounts to the strut, instead of the control arm, for increased efficiency. This significantly lightens the layout, while retaining roll stiffness.

In the lower arms, the bushing design is based on the current Subaru Liberty.

REAR

The double wishbone rear suspension is newly developed and based on that in the WRX STI.

It increases driver feel, making it easier to gauge rear grip.

A new sub-frame was developed for the higher capacity differential, with angles for the propeller shaft joint, rear differential tilt and other components optimized for BRZ.

In the sub-frame, heavy plating is used for the differential carrier front bracket, ensuring strength and durability to withstand greater acceleration.

Roll centre height for both front and rear suspension is tuned exclusively for BRZ.

Springs are stiffened for the sub-frame bushings, producing quick rear grip response and feel.

STEERING SYSTEM

BRZ's steering system uses column assist electric power.

An electric motor is integrated into the steering column, while a torque sensor in the motor housing detects torque applied to the steering wheel.

Locating the motor and torque sensor in the column and installing sensors throughout the cabin reduces the impact of external heat and dust, improving reliability.

A high-output, low inertia three-phase brushless electric motor provides power assist.

Connection points near the motor improve steering rigidity.

BRZ's steering column uses a double tube, double shaft system that effectively absorbs collision energy.

A universal joint improves rigidity and reduces rotational play, improving steering feel and reducing noise.

In the rack and pinion steering gearbox, the ratio is a quick 13:1, producing good response.

A dynamic damper is used to reduce steering vibration and achieve a comfortable ride.

The damper floats in the centre pad of the steering wheel on a rubber guard.

SAFETY

STRUCTURE

BRZ's new generation ring-shaped reinforcement body structure delivers excellent energy absorption in collisions.

To keep the body both light weight and rigid, 53 per cent high-tensile steel is used, graded at 400 MPa or higher.

Separately, to help lower the centre of gravity and aid safety, 980 MPa ultra high-strength steel is used in some other critical areas, including the centre pillars and side rails.

1500 MPa-graded hot-pressed steel is used for centre braces.

The cabins is also protected through use of 1270 MPa high-strength tensile steel roll beams.

A lightweight and rigid aluminium under cover connects to BRZ's front frame, suppressing motion from the front suspension cross member.

BRZ has an aluminium bonnet, reducing weight and aiding front: rear weight distribution and also contributing to pedestrian safety.

AIRBAGS

BRZ features dual front, side, curtain and driver's knee SRS airbags.

VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL

BRZ is fitted with five-mode Vehicle Stability Control, contributing to fun, safe driving.

FIELD OF VISION

Despite its low stance, BRZ has been designed to offer an excellent field of vision for the driver.

ANCAP

As with the entire Subaru range in Australia, BRZ has an independent five-star rating for occupant safety from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

BRAKES

BRZ has 16-inch ventilated front disc brakes and 15-inch ventilated rear.

The one-inch master cylinder is highly rigid, with a short stroke.
